As a lieutenant colonel, Ryck is given command of the Second Battalion, Third Marines, the Fuzos. Along with one other battalion, 2/3 is designated as a new assault battalion, with its own armor, artillery, and air assets. With the Marine Corps anxious to certify the resurfaced concept of integrated operations units, the battalion is thrown right into the fire.
With his new command, Ryck has the opportunity to prove his ability to be a true combat leader and not just as a warrior. But with that opportunity comes the risk that he cannot handle the manager aspect of command the logistics, training, maintenance, admin, and support aspects that allow every unit to maximize its combat potential.
As a sergeant and junior office, Ryck has ordered men to their death before, but with a battalion, he has to make even harder decisions with even greater reach, decisions that will mean life and death to those affected. A proven fighting Marine, Ryck still has to master every requirement of command—the tactical and the support—if he is going to keep his career alive in the Corps.

Lieutenant Colonel The United Federation Marine Corps Book 6 eBook Jonathan P Brazee

Great addition to the series! If you liked the earlier books you will like this one as well. Without give away any spoilers, the story starts out with now Lt. Col Ryck Lysander taking command of one of the two newly created Marine Assault Battalions (what many in today's US military would call a combined arms battalion) and follows him and the Battalion from some of their initial training and through their first full deployment. One thing this book does a good job of is describing the internal thoughts, conflicts, and growth of an officer as they transition from one of the more front line ranks (Enlisted and Jr Officer) into the beginnings of the more political ranks within the Corps and military. (i.e. 'Full Bird' Colonel and higher) This can be seen throughout the book as LtCol. Lystander starts to wonder and think more and more about the motivations of the event happening around him and begins to become concerned with more than simply completing the mission. It also shows his transition and beginning to realize that he's no longer 'one of the guys' but has become leader and commander of troops. ala 'A Lord Commander has no friends' and 'Command is Lonely'.
We also see Ryck reflect some on his past mostly with regards to his family life and again trying not to spoil anything, that while he had some regrets and wish that he could have been home more, he understands why. While not every solider goes through this self reflection, many with families will eventually have similar thoughts the longer they stay in. Some many not agree with the Ryck's reasoning and ultimate conclusion, however there will always be those willing to "run TO the sound of gun fire" to protect the innocent, the Lysander character is written as one of those people, so one must take that into account. If you don't understand read some Kipling especially: Barrack-Room Ballads. Even better go visit and talk with a WWII or other Veterans group.

Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Lieutenant Colonel The United Federation Marine Corps Book 6 eBook Jonathan P Brazee Reviews

Well written, great story flow, good description of command responsibility, the agony of losing men, good description of the inner demons, that a commander has to battle afterward.
Great military action and adventure. The U.F.M.C. #6 has lived up to all the other books. Great intriguing characters with awesome battle sequences and enough personal interaction to make it believable.
Well the author again advanced the story with a compelling military action component, I am looking forward to the next chapter ,and I hope we will begin to see what the path reveals as the hero moves to upper command. I suspect we will see a new twist. As always this was well written and action packed as with other in the series I highly recommend!
This is not a stand alone book you would need to read it from the first book to understand whats happening to character development. I enjoy this authors writing material and style. While I have never served in the military. I do work in federal service and can understand many of the issues that the author must have had to deal with in his career and is portraying in these books. The ethical dilemmas we face each day choosing the lesser of two evils and serving a dysfunctional government, being run by self serving professional criminals we call politicians.
Ryck finds himself in command of Second Battalion, Third Marines, the Fuzos. Ever since he sent his brother in law to defend them knowing he would most assuredly die Ryck carries his dead in his mind. No officer wants to give the order but for the greater good there is often sacrifices made. It was another lively read as Ryck climbs the ranks.
I have followed the exploits of Rick Lysander from the beginning. And I have enjoyed each and every story. At the moment I am reading the next installment, Colonel. I am not one to talk about the story. But I can say that Colonel Brazee is an excellent writer. His books are written for someone like me who has served in the Military under combat conditions. It is a help to me to be able to read books like these that let me know that I am not alone in how I feel at times. In short, it is a great help to my PTSD. I thank you Colonel Brazee for your insightful books.
It is not unusual that the later novels in a series tends to be somewhat disappointing, like the writer has tired of his theme and his characters. So is not the case with Jonathan Brazee and his latest book which perhaps is the best one so far. His main character, Rick Lysander, is growing as a commander and a human being. I can easily connect with his leaqdership problems since I also started in the ranks and worked myself up to colonel before I retired. Micromanagement is much easier than learning to delegate. The Germans have a Word for delegated leadership, "Auftragstaktik". Some of my contemporary colleagues never learned that and were absolutely detested by their subordinates. Jonathan Brazee describes this very well as well as the action scenes. Highly recommended and I look forward to the next novel.

Regards

Hans
